Lane Cove Cats 3.4.22 Balgowlah Suns 4.4.28
On a rather madcap morning, the Suns game at (the unbeaten) Lane Cove was delayed by an hour and a half, creating havoc for the under 11’s, who were waiting on 3-4 of the under 10’s to turn up for their game an hour later in Leichardt.
After many phone calls, it was decided two of the 10’s would rush down to the under 11’s (so they had 9 players!), and the 10’s would have 10. Felix Chamberlain got the call up from the under 8’s Reds v Blues derby (pulled out mid game!) to make it 11, and finally we were set to go. I need a latte.
It was a brilliant first quarter from the Suns as Noah kicked 3 goals (he does that), and it looked like the 11 man team would cruise it. However, Lane Cove weren’t unbeaten for nothing, and scored a good goal plus a couple of behinds to remain in the contest at quarter time, 18-8.
The second quarter was a brutal affair in the midfield with neither team giving any quarter (sorry) and bodies on the line, the Cats snagged a goal, the Suns just 2 behinds as the half finished at 20-13.
(Meanwhile, in Leichardt, the 9 under 11’s were 61-1 up at half time!)
The third quarter was much like the second, with too few handballs, a little too much free running and bouncing from the Suns and not many goals. The Suns scored 2 behinds, the Cats 1, which could easily have been more, but credit to the defence for holding firm, including one goal saving combined tackle from Felix and Marcus. 22-14 at 3/4 time.
It just felt like one more goal would do it, and so it proved as Liam H kicked one for a 28-14 lead. But still the Cats came, and scored a goal and two behinds to put the tie a goal away at 28-22. The Suns had more of the territory in the quarter, and whilst it felt tight, they were deserved winners in the end. Hugely hard fought victory, keeping the unbeaten run going. Magnificent spirit across the park from the boys. Respect!
Thanks as ever to the coaches and managers, and to PJ for the brilliant stats work. Thanks also to Felix for stepping into the breach, much appreciated by your team mates.
See you all next week. Ed.
